5363-pixel colour line scan camera, model RA-LSC-0718

Design and construction of the RA-LSC-0718 line scan camera was completed in March 2016. The RA-LSC-0718 is a 5363-pixel color line scan camera that runs at 1020 Hz. You can use this camera to measure the width of objects and scan objects on a conveyor belt. The spectral response and parametric specifications of this line scan camera are shown below.

Selection guide

What this camera is good for

Color scanning, print inspection and color sorting

This color camera has three separate sensor lines, one each for red, green and blue. Each line has 5,363 pixels of 8 μm × 8 μm over 42.904 mm, so every point on the object is measured directly in all three colors. We recommend the RA-LSC-0718 for color measurement and sorting on conveyors and for inspection on printing lines. It runs at 1,020 lines/s with a 10670:1 dynamic range and 8-bit output, and its 400 to 700 nm response covers the visible band only.

  • Color sorting of products

You get three color values for each of the 5,363 points across the width. That lets you sort grain, parts or recycled material by color. In a 400 mm field of view each pixel sees 0.075 mm of the object, and the camera records 1,020 lines per second.

  • Print and color inspection

Color shifts, smudges and misregistration show up across the full web width. The 400 to 700 nm response matches the range of printing inks. Each channel is compared with the reference at 8 bits, or 256 levels.

  • Document and artwork scanning

On a 600 mm wide document or artwork, each pixel sees 0.11 mm. The sensor's 10670:1 dynamic range holds on to detail in dark areas. Gain and offset let you map exactly the brightness range you need onto the 8-bit output.

  • Color scanning on conveyors

As the object moves, the lines build up a two-dimensional color image. In a 400 mm field of view it should move no faster than about 76 mm/s to avoid a stretched or squashed image. The spacing between the three color lines is corrected with a fixed line delay.

  • Width measurement using color

The camera finds the object's edges along the 5,363 pixels. Because it relies on the color difference between object and background, changes in brightness don't move the edge threshold. You get 1,020 measurements per second.

What the specs mean in practice

Three 5,363-pixel lines with red, green and blue filters record every point in three separate channels. Unlike Bayer sensors, no pixel's color is guessed, and each channel resolves at the full 8 μm pitch. In a 400 mm field of view each pixel sees 0.075 mm of the object, so the object should move no faster than about 76 mm/s. The three lines sit a fixed distance apart, so each color sees a given point a few lines later. For the colors to line up correctly, the ratio of line rate to belt speed must stay constant. The 10670:1 dynamic range (about 13.4 bits) is more than the 8-bit output can hold. Gain and offset let you choose which part of it maps onto the 256 output levels.

Before you order

The 42.904 mm sensor needs a lens with a large image circle. The focal length is roughly the working distance × 42.904 mm ÷ the web width. The lens's lateral chromatic aberration must stay below the 8 μm pitch, or the three channels won't line up. The 980 μs minimum exposure is effectively the line period at 1,020 lines/s, so use continuous white light of sufficient intensity. For static scans in low light, exposure can go up to 71 minutes. The -I version includes an FPGA, gain and offset adjustment, an 8-bit ADC, 480 Mbit/s USB, an analog output and on-board RAM, and operates from ⁦-10⁩ to ⁦+55⁩ °C.
