Photo finish system

When several competitors cross the finish line almost at the same time, the race is said to have a photo finish. The naked eye cannot tell which competitor crossed the line first. That is why a photo or video taken at the finish line has to be used for closer inspection. Sometimes the organizers of a sporting event may declare a race void. A finish photo greatly reduces, or even completely eliminates, the chance of this happening. Finish-line photos are still used in almost every modern racing sport. Although some sports use electronic equipment to track competitors during the race, the finish photo is considered the most important evidence in choosing the winner. These photos are not only important in close races; they are also used to determine each competitor's exact time in the race.

Photo finish cameras were developed in the 1940s and 1950s as a way to bring verification to the racing industry and reduce cheating. In the middle decades of the 20th century, betting on races became increasingly common. Race organizers were also widely accused of corruption. So they wanted to identify winners more accurately. Finish-photo cameras usually use strip photography. In this method, the camera points at the finish line from a high position in a tower and records only the sequence of events on that line, in the vertical dimension. Each part of each competitor's body is recorded at the moment it crosses the line. Anything stationary appears as a horizontal line. The horizontal position represents time, and the time markings along the bottom of the photo can be used to find each competitor's exact crossing time. The high angle lets the judges see each competitor's position relative to the others. In an ordinary photo, the image shows different places at a single fixed moment in time. Strip photography swaps time and space; that is, it shows different times at a single fixed place. The background of the final image is often plain white. This background is actually a continuous scan of the painted finish line. Competitors may look distorted in the image, depending on how their arms and heads move as they cross the line. If a limb stays still or moves backward relative to the shutter slit, it appears stretched in the image. If a limb crosses the line faster than the rest of the body, it appears shorter in the image.
