Ultrafast camera

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have built a new generation of ultrafast camera. It records 100 billion frames per second. The technology service of ISNA Khorasan reported the news.

Ultrafast camera

How does the ultrafast camera work?

The team of Professor Lihong Wang, a professor of biomedical engineering, built the camera. They used compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) with a laser beam. With this method they filmed four natural phenomena.

Professor Wang said this method let them see and record light pulses in the air for the first time. In his words, ultrafast laser imaging has opened up a new world of astonishing images.

This camera is nothing like an ordinary camera. It is really a set of advanced instruments such as ultrafast microscopes and telescopes. The laser beam captures very fast events and sends the raw data to a computer. The computer processes the data and turns it into understandable images.

Professor Richard Conroy, head of planning and research for the project, says this achievement deepens our understanding of ultrafast natural phenomena. The method also helps build better dynamic models. The journal Nature has published the details.

High-speed imaging in industry

The University of Washington's ultra-fast camera is a laboratory tool. But speed matters a lot in industry too. On production lines, objects sometimes move faster than the eye can follow. RasaAndishan cameras are designed to capture exactly these moments.

All of the company's cameras support external triggering. If you synchronize the trigger with the fan's rotation and set a short exposure, you see the fan blades standing still at 4000 rpm. The company's area scan cameras are also used in particle image velocimetry (PIV). See the models on the Image processing camera page.
